Ohio HB 257 Back in Action

The Ohio state flag waves in the wind with a partly cloudy sky in the background

With summer recess now over, the Ohio legislature got back in action with a hearing on HB 257, the Ohio Medical Debt Fairness Act, on September 17th in the Ohio House Health Committee.

Introduced in early May, Ohio HB 257 would:

  • Lower the maximum interest rate for medical debt to 3% per year.
  • Prohibit hospitals, medical providers, and third-party collectors from reporting medical debt to credit agencies.
  • Prohibit wage garnishment for medical debt collections.

Ohio HB 257 has not advanced past the committee stage at this point, but Americollect will continue to follow any advancements that come after the committee hearing.
