The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) announced recently that its new rule for debt collectors will not take effect on Oct. 1, 2025, as scheduled.
The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection announced on its website that they have not yet determined the new effective date, delaying its release for the third time. The original effective date was Dec. 1, 2024.
Americollect had previously reported on the finalized rule, but the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection received numerous written and oral comments from stakeholders regarding the amended debt collection rule. The DCWP will complete a review process and at that time issue a final rule with a new enactment date or issue a new proposal and open the process up for an additional round of public comments. With no set timeframe for the comment process, nothing is expected until late 2025 or early 2026.
The full NYC debt collection rules can be found here.
